Neat, but it’s a staged photo.

I knew I couldn’t stand on the flow and wait till my stuff caught fire, it was way too hot for that, so I brought along some lighter fluid to get the flames going in an instant.

That’s disappointing

Wait, where's the picture of the photographer who took THIS picture?

He and (insert here a name of divine ruler of afterlife) are probably looking at it and saying: Totally worth it

all those years playing "the floor is lava" finally paid off

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I can't tell if this guy is really good or really bad at the game. Probably have to have him pull out some en passant style play to tell. "That's not lava because it has a surface temperature below 600°" or some obscure geologist/volcanologist rule.

I love the idea that non-geologists/volcanologists don't get the same immunity buffs when attempting to walk on lava, only the true practitioners can do it

In photography, there’s a saying: “Anything for the shot”

I don’t know if I’d go as far as this guy, but props to him for risking himself and his equipment, I guess

Ive actually been on the lave flows in Hawaii. Not catch your shit on fire hot, but where the surface was noticeable warm from the lava underneath.

Pele's hair I think is one of the coolest things you find. https://www.nps.gov/havo/learn/nature/peles-hair.htm

Oh wow birds make their nests out of razer thin shards of glass? Crazy.

It's where they grow fiberglass, for home insulation and boat hulls.

Bro ruining a perfectly good pair of Asics for nothing.

[–] QuantumSparkles@sh.itjust.works 30 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It’s probably a pretty good shot from there tbh

If by nothing you mean not burning his feet then ok

[–] Pandemanium@lemm.ee 1 points 2 days ago

And a whole tripod. What a waste.

Darwin Award contestants wont worry about a skills pair of shoes.

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world -1 points 2 days ago

the cost of clicks and views

I feel like melted rubber fused to your feet would be rather unpleasant... Hope he got those shoes off in time.

[–] GhostFaceSkrilla@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I feel like they lit some rubbing alcohol or something for this shot and immediately put it out after the pose. I doubt he would have gotten back without life threatening burns if it was in fact hot enough to ignite his shoes and tripod legs. Still crazy to be standing on a volcano though.

Who watches the watchers?

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Breaking through the crust would be spicy.

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Oooo... hottt!

im so risk averse, this seems like an image of insanity.

[–] kellyaster@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Brother has got balls of steel balancing on the roof of Pele's house like that. Oh, I just realized this was shit over a decade ago... er, I'd imagine this kind of photographyis done with drones now?

I feel like a tiny bit of prep with metal caps on the tripod and foil or a metal sheet or something would go a long way.

Last time I was on The Big Island (which was a while ago) there was a tourist in front of us standing on the dried lava with shorts and flip-flops.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works -2 points 2 days ago

This looks fake.
