I was today years old when I realized that she was talking to Homer Hickam, and I've seen the movie October Sky more times than I can count.

[–] Deepus@lemm.ee 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I was today years old when i realised that NASA employees arent allowed to swear. Fuck that dude, dont care who he is.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 22 points 2 days ago

There is a level of professionalism you should have when you work at some places, but personally I think a little crass celebration should definitely be allowed.

That said, whether she knew who he was or not, her actual response wasn't necessary.

He doesn't want the aliens to learn swear words or they might start adding them to the crop circles. Obviously.

What was the original exchange? I can't remember, though I do remember the drama to follow.

There's probably higher quality pictures out there, but I figured this would work

I bet you have your reasons for posting the most dogshit version of this picture available, while also linking to a site with a much clearer version.

In case someone wants a better version and to save a click:

Censoring language on a screenshot is so stupid. Who is doing this? For what purpose?

[–] hangonasecond@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Reach a broader audience on dogshit platforms. At least this is proper censoring and not a piss take off a line through the "bad word"

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 29 points 3 days ago (4 children)

That's only slightly less dogshit.

If you want to learn more about it than is frankly reasonable, Jamie Loftus recorded a detailed history including an interview with Naomi H.

[–] WolfLink@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

TLDR from the actual interview with her:

  • She did lose the internship. He did try to get it back for her but it didn’t work.
  • She eventually ended up working for Boeing, but on commercial jet engines rather than space stuff.
  • they called her to rescind her internship while she was at her brother’s wedding
[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Heartbreaking.

Also imagine having a social media account actual tied to you irl

[–] scarilog@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Also imagine having a social media account actual tied to you irl

Nothing wrong with that, need to keep in touch with friends somehow.

Posting shit like this on a social media account tied to you irl is just being stupid, that's what burners are for. If I said shit like this to a higher up at a company that I just received an internship at (even somewhere with waaaay less prestige than NASA), I would not be expecting to keep that internship.

yEs!

thanks

worth it, thanks.

apparently Homer Hickman tried to help her get her job back, but it didn't work, but now she's an aerospace engineer at Boeing...so things are going great .

no problems there.

[–] coyootje@lemmy.world 44 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Until she discovers a problem and tries to become a whistleblower.

[–] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 18 points 3 days ago

yup, or literally anything else that could possibly happen at that company right now.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh, so that's why the fronts are falling off all their ~~boats~~ planes.

[–] GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk 19 points 3 days ago (2 children)

That doesn't sound very typical.

[–] DJDarren@thelemmy.club 17 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Well, it’s not supposed to happen.

[–] Glifted@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (3 children)
