Can confirm, I replaced bunch of useless cloud crap on my mum's phone with simple tools and she likes it. I use them too.
I really like Aves Libre.
Me too, been using it for a few weeks now and it works great for me. That being said, I don't have that many photos/videos, so I don't know how it handles large content collections.

Yeah, the video player is shit, crashes all the time. I just use VLC for the videos and the gallery app for the images.
Displaying images, truly a technological breakthrough for the modern era!
Not the gallery app, but my MIUI file manager has fucking ads
