Why? Why not?

I don't care about the ranks themselves, but I am tempted to give it a go and see if it results in better matchmaking than standard play.

It's almost as if they're testing many waters in this alpha game before they commit to a system.

Yoshi on the forums has also created a thread for people to send the match IDs for unfairly and/or weirdly balanced matches so they can analyse in detail
