Yeah it's not that great of a movie, but if you're a Liam Neeson fan you might want to watch it.

It was only uploaded yesterday, so it might be taken down pretty soon!

I'd never heard of Biggles, but it's apparently an extremely popular series of books in the UK based on an ace WWI (and eventually WWII) pilot and his team. The first book was released in 1936, putting it smack-dab in the pulp magazine era.

The idea of a movie had been bounced around for many decades, but finally they got the ball rolling in the 80's. The script was complete, and it was about to begin filming when the first Back to The Future was released, and the executives decided they wanted to cash in on the time-travel shtick. They re-wrote the script to accommodate a time-travel aspect, instead of it being purely in the WWI.

Seems like that would result in a disaster of a film, but by god they pulled it off. The casting choices were excellent, the story is well executed, but the real star of the show are the stunts, practical effects, and the sets!

The movie had less than half the budget of Back to the Future, but it really doesn't feel like it, except in one specific special effect. The sets at times make it feel like a higher budget movie than it is, with the WWI trench scenes in particular looking excellent.

There's some crazily well shot action scenes in this, and you can tell the director was having an absolute blast with them, and the cast seemed to as well.

There aren't really any other movies I can think of that combine WWI dogfights with 80's synth-y rock (from Jon Anderson of Yes, no less!).

It's campy, it's pulpy, it's funny, it's great. If you like back to the future or pulp stories, give this one a shot!

Also, slightly sad fact, the music video for one of the songs used in the film by The Immortials features one of Peter Cushing's last appearances on film before his death.

There've been a couple major sequels and re-makes that have bombed recently, namely Joker and The Crow, and so this leads to the question: how do you successfully follow up a movie that seems like it could have no sequel?

Here's the answer. The original 1992 Bad Lieutenant would seem like it could have no follow-up, but I argue this film succeeds for a couple reasons.

  1. Good actors. I'm not a huge Nicholas Cage fan, but he does the job here, with his typical somewhat-unhinged burnout persona. Solid backups by people like Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, and even a memorable scene with Fairuza Balk.

  2. Great director: Werner Herzog. Wikipedia sez:

French filmmaker François Truffaut once called Herzog "the most important film director alive".

  1. Low expectations. "Port of Call New Orleans" had relatively modest production budget of 25 mil so the fact that it only made 10 mil domestically was bad, but not a disaster. (I mean it only ran in 24-96 venues total so they weren't expecting much!)

  2. A story that could stand alone. Apparently Herzog didn't even want to use the "Bad Lieutenant" prefix, and Abel Ferrara was mad about it, and there are no returning characters, so... Thematically there's a parallel though, and I think the movie's richer for that being made explicit in the title.

Anyway, it's not an amazing movie or anything, it gets a bit campy at times, but I'm pretty sure Herzog's doing that on purpose and it's worth watching at least once.

This is an odd 90's anime about a gunsmith living in Chicago who bounty hunts on the side, along with her explosive obsessed partner.

The dub is pretty solid, and the action scenes are quite excellent. Due to the gunsmithing aspect, there's a particular focus on accurately modelling the weapons shown, and apparently all the animators were given airsoft replicas of the guns along with a bunch of gun magazines to ensure they were getting the details right, which makes this a favorite among gun nuts.

It does a good job of capturing the vibe of mid-90's Chicago with the soundtrack and visuals, reminiscent of the Cowboy Bebop movie opening. The animators flew out to Chicago to make sure they captured some authenticity, which you can see in the making of video (NSFW).

This 'movie' is technically 3 separate OVA's combined into one video, but they all interconnect, so I think it gets a pass.

Jack the Giant Killer is a 1962 American heroic fantasy adventure film starring Kerwin Mathews in a fairy tale story about a young man who defends a princess against a sorcerer's giants and demons.

The film is loosely based on the traditional tale "Jack the Giant Killer" and features extensive use of stop-motion animation. It was directed by Nathan H. Juran and later reedited and rereleased as a musical by producer Edward Small because Columbia Pictures, which released The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, threatened to sue Small. The original print without the music was released 30 years later with no protest from Columbia Pictures, while United Artists continues to own the rights to the musical version of the film. The film reunited Mathews, Juran, Small and actor Torin Thatcher, all of whom had worked on The 7th Voyage of Sinbad.

The film stars Dev Patel as Srinivasa Ramanujan, a real-life mathematician who, after growing up poor in Madras, India, earns admittance to Cambridge University during World War I, where he becomes a pioneer in mathematical theories with the guidance of his professor, G. H. Hardy, portrayed by Jeremy Irons.

...

After the film's world premiere, Allan Hunter in Screen Daily found the film to be "a well-heeled, sincere production following the memories of Ramanujan's English mentor and friend ... The film tells such a good story that it is hard to resist. The old-fashioned virtues of a well-told tale and a particularly fine performance from Jeremy Irons should endear the film to that supposedly under-served older demographic who like to turn out for a weekday matinee ... Mathematics plays a key role in the story, but in a way that is entirely accessible, allowing the viewer to comprehend the advances that Ramanujan made and why his legacy remains so important almost a century after his death."

After seeing an interesting video from the Feral Historian on the book of the same name. His use of clips from the movie adaption from 1994 led me to look for that, and easily found the Made-for-TV movie right on the tubes, and figured I'd share it here.

Rutger gives a great performance, but the film isn't regarded super highly. The author of the book has said that he doesn't care for it either, so bear that in mind if you decide to give it a watch.

The setting, per the intro:

After a failed Normandy invasion, the US pulled out of the war, and Germany was allowed to conquer all of Europe, including Britain, and the atrocities of the Holocaust never become public knowledge.

Germany is still embroiled in its perpetual war against the Soviet Union, which is still led by the 85-year-old Joseph Stalin. The 1960 US presidential election is won by Joseph Kennedy,

Hitler is trying to rebrand Nazi Germany with a softer image in the hopes of officially ending the war with the US and forming an alliance, now that a newly elected President Joseph Kennedy is in power (whose anti-Semitic views have been well-publicized).

In 1964, as Adolf Hitler's 75th birthday approaches, Kennedy heads to a summit meeting in Germany, whose borders are being opened to media from the United States and Latin America.

However, when a body is found floating in a lake near Berlin, an SS Major. Berlin Police detective, Xavier March, is assigned the case, and threatens to derail everything.
