I watched some random small travel channels, and videos titled like "Why Vanlife sucks", which apparently has become its own genre by now. I can't find any really good ones anymore right now, though :( maybe this topic needs a community! I will post any videos I do find here, though.

Okay so I tried and I got a hard reality check, man. I watch way too much YouTube. Even when searching for key words I'm drowning in content or not finding anything. This is destabilizing.

For me it's a mixture of schadenfreude, having people receive their comeuppance (as another here said) and also sympathy. I have had some bad travel experiences, and just sort of go "Oooh boy, that's bad, come on, you got this! .. but you also deserved this!", as I might have deserved some of mine.

You have won my heart with "minor animal attacks on hikers". Hello, friend!

When you watch it with an account, yes - and even then, I'm afraid to venture down into those depths 😬 I might try for you guys 😬

I'm trying to find some of the old videos that I watched, but it's really hard! I guess that kind of content disappears quickly beneath the thousands of similar videos.

One of my favorites back then was a dude on his expensive BMW motorcycle traveling India, and in the chaotic traffic there he had a small crash and it bent his fork, and he also got a hairline fracture on his ankle, I believe.

So, the x-ray machines in the hospital was too bad to image that fracture. So that went untreated and caused him a looot of discomfort. Also, almost nobody in India rides such expensive BMW bikes, so it took him aaages and crazy amounts of money to get a spare part for that bike shipped from Germany, and to find a tech that could install it. It was excellent suffering born from luxury. Can recommend.

Yes, that might have been an early start into the genre for me! I fiercely love Karl Pilkington 🥲

So during COVID lockdowns I developed this guilty pleasure of watching YouTubers having miserable times, in the best case vanlife YouTubers.

I'm feeling the old itch, can you help me? Do you know any videos of people on travel channels having really, really bad times?

I prefer vanlife people, followed by boatlife people. But I'm open to different modes of transport. The more privileged the people and the more miserable their travels, the better.

Edit: so I will give you guys something at least, can't find any of the random small stuff I watched years ago atm. The channel vagrant holiday maybe doesn't quite fulfill the criteria, because the guy is doing everything consciously, but it's a fantastic channel, and there definitely is discomfort:

Looks like a satisfying project

Yeah when did that happen

But that is exactly what he recommends, using a password manager - with one time email authentication for the first login as an extra step, right?

I'd be interested in a discussion of his points here :) those sound like valid points he's making

You're not helping, but I sympathize (that AAF flashback is what got me unto this trail - and I got to AAF through this new Bam Margera doc that dropped on YouTube two weeks ago, maybe that will give you even more flashbacks)

There is this Alien Ant Farm song called "Sarah Wynn" about a drug using young woman.

Apparently the band saw a documentary about a woman with that name and wrote the song about her.

I need to know - is Sarah Lynn based on this?

What documentary was the song based on?

(Please help me, I am in pain from not knowing this)

I tried duckduckgoing it for quite a bit and failed. Does anybody have an idea?

Hey guys,

so I posted here a few weeks ago, with the idea of donating a gaming PC to a nursing home. I talked to someone in charge there today, this might actually happen.

Thing is, to try this out I would probably have to supply the software (Microsoft Flight Simulator being the most important now.)

As I understand it, you can only use the Flight Simulator with a Microsoft account. If I let them use my own account, that would mean a PC with my logged in account would be standing around there in the open, for anyone to access.

Does anyone have any idea how to approach this in a safe manner? I wish I could just buy a physical copy and let them have it for a while, before they buy their own. But even those need a connected Microsoft account nowadays, it seems.

Was also thinking of buying a used Xbox Series S (this might become the long term solution anyway), but same issue with the account, I believe.

(Man, modern gaming keeps finding ways to be annoying sometimes.)

P.S. If you have great game recommendations for octogenarians, bring them on!

Recently talked to a 90+ year old man in a park in front of his nursing home, guy is a former RC plane enthusiast. Can't do anything now because of his age, though. Bored all the time, sitting in the park is his highlight.

Thinking of donating an old gaming PC that can somewhat run the Microsoft flight simulator. Would that be a good idea? Can the average 80-90 year old use that at all, just speaking sensorically and motor skill wise?

Are there any other thoughts you have on that idea?

We all knew it

So I'm talking about playing previously Windows-only games on Linux, e.g. via proton.

I don't know about the libraries etc that are used - is it possible for Microsoft to use some legal voodoo, for example, to suddenly end it all, and make the use of their libraries illegal (if they belong to Microsoft in the first place)?

Or could there be other ways of interference?

I was thinking of something like the Duff Man theme and slapping sounds and moans, but I feel that Lemmy knows better.

(Obviously, I would start texting and calling him during the next meeting)

I've been reading the same thing a couple of times lately, company x removes Denuvo from game y.

What is happening? Are we returning to a state of innocence and purity?

Hello, I love this community, but I can't stand it that so many posts don't feature the year that the artwork was made. That's such important information, just to place that piece of art in context. Maybe it can be made a requirement to include the year? What do you think?

I think it's silly to speak in full sentences to home assistants, when I really just use 5 commands most of the time.

It would be snappier to make weird sounds, produced by snapping ones tongue e.g., like some African tribes use in their languages.

Or any other weird, short sounds.

It might be more satisfying to use, and probably funnier.

Also, over the course of a few years this might find its way into everyday spoken language. Which would be wonderfully dystopian and maybe funny.
